Long Talking

Dance in song, and then acting; an insatiable amibition and desire to improve himself turned into an engine, the 25-year-old Yamashita Tomohisa who runs at full speed through his summer. A long talk, from the emotions he pours into his work, to the differences between men's and women's sense of values, and the near future.


His look is sharp, yet his chest is as mighty as always. Yamashita Tomohisa-san, who has just finished shooting his role as the hero that crosses the times, Yabuki Joe, in the movie 『Ashita no Joe』, looks more and more manly.

「I lost a lot more weight while shooting. Recently I've been going to the gym once a week, but during filming I did quite a lot of muscle training. It was really harsh (laugh)」


While doing that during filming, the days in actor mode facing his duties, which must have been hard, passed by, and in Yamashita-san's head now it's completely music mode. Barely coming out of a successful solo concert last Fall, he quickly has his third solo single 『One in a million』 released.

「I sort of didn't want to rest. Shooting for movies and dramas is quite intense so I forget about it, but basically in my head I always think of concerts and music. I want to study singing and dancing more, and find out ways that will make the audience enjoy themselves more. I always think about these things. I feel that I'm always looking for that which will overcome the nervousness and fright I got the first time I got on stage for a concert. I go to concerts of Japanese and foreign artists, I'm slowly studying, but I wonder if I'm learning any of it」


What he has on his mind is, 「Never give up」. Together with the release of the new song, he composed the melody and wrote the lyrics of 『World is yours』, a peculiar 「Encouragement song」, considering he's mostly written love songs till now. Was there some change in state of mind?

「It's not like I lost interest in love. But it's difficult for guys and girls to understand each other, right? A guy, meaning well is instead misunderstood, and what a girl does, the guy might understand as the opposite. Honestly, even if I watch movies and dramas that portray women's feelings, I still don't get them (laugh). "Women like to do this sort of thing, huh," I learn a lot of things like that but their brains are different by nature, so it's difficult for men and women to understand each other. However, as long as there are people who feel they want to be together, they don't need to worry about that. That's how I've felt about it lately. Each and every person has their own style, after all」


But, the feeling that "I want to become happy without abandoning hope" is something he feels is common between men and women.

「There are many people who have worries and want to do certain things but can't. But, for the time being, believing in oneself and doing what one wants to do is fine. Right now, I too think that if I believe and go ahead with my dreams, they will come true. Exactly that. There was a time when everyone believed there was no way for us to fly in the sky, yet now we can go wherever we want in the world with planes, and we can even go to outer space. I would really like to go to different places around the world and do concerts as a solo artist and as NEWS. I will absolutely make that dream become reality. It's important to think like that」


I'm sure many have realized this but Yamashita-san is actually quite work-oriented [to avoid using ugly words like "workaholic" >.<]. That's quite an uncommon thing among so many guys that nowadays have softened and prefer to live for their hobbies than for work.
This summer he's so busy, it doesn't even seem he'll be able to do his very much loved surfing. But, speaking of summer, it's a season in which girls become scantily dressed. What does he feel is appealing about a girl's body? [Oh goodness, I can't believe they asked this! I'm blushing all over >////< I don't wanna read! Would you hate me if I skipped this question? ^^;; I guess you would ^^;; But you guys definitely owe me one! I'm getting a heart attack while reading this >/////<]

「I like it when it's slightly plump, yes. One that seems to feel good to the touch. And the hips as well, something sexy like this (makes a heart shape with both hands) is what I like. But in the end, all of that is just at the beginning, all appearance. What goes on in their mind is important, all in all. Like, their use of words, their manners. If they have common sense and don't only think of themselves but of the people around them and society. In the past 2 years I've realized that sort of thing is more important」


Saying that doesn't mean he hates girls who do "body make." [1]

「Of course that's important, too! 'Cause you see, that means you're able to manage yourself. If you don't want to gain weight you have to work hard. And in the end it's connected to your heart. People who work hard, they properly hold themselves and are able to do what must be done, so I like them. I think people who work hard at their jobs are also amazing. However, women's bodies are different from men's, so if they get tired I'd like them not to overdo it. I think if you can sleep about 8 hours and go to work at a healthy rhythm then that's happiness. As for men, I think they can work hard, even if they're tired」


So he's that mannish with that old-fashioned way of thinking. There are surely many girls who would like to be protected by someone who has such a manly gentleness. The word "Protect (mamoru)" is an important keyword for Yamashita-san, too.

「What's important for me is protecting my family and cherishing my friends and my lover. For that, I'll do my best at work, earn my income, and make everyone happy. And then I want to take my grandparents to a place where they can see pretty scenery. And at the last moments of my life, I just wish many people will think of me. [I think I'm about to cry >.<] Family and friends are valuable. They're one's allies, no matter what. That's why I want to support my friends at all times. Even if they commit some crime, I want to give them the benefit of the doubt, that there must be some reason behind it. I think I won't draw back at moments like that. If I don't trust them that much, I can't call them my friends」


But, there's another presence he believes in. He always talks in a detached manner, yet without realizing it, words full of passion.

「Fans are extremely valuable. The existance of people who cheer me on with all their hearts is great power for me. When it comes down to it, my wanting to practice singing and dancing so much more is related to that. There's nothing else beside that, right? I can't know what's inside each and every one of their hearts, but their love for me is genuine. To respond to that, I will give my all」
